No v. Google

In October 2020, the United States Department of Justice declined to file suit against Google for maintaining an illegal monopoly in search and search advertising, judging the case too weak to prosecute after internal disagreement over remedy and timing. Google's default-placement contracts with Apple, Mozilla, and device manufacturers continued uninterrupted through the decade, and no structural or behavioral remedy was ever imposed on its search business.

Where this world left ours

Nobody has traced this world's timeline yet.

TodayGoogle retains uncontested default status across the vast majority of mobile and desktop browsers, and its search-advertising revenue has grown into the trillion-dollar range through the integration of generative AI answers directly into results pages. Smaller search entrants and AI-native search startups describe an uphill market structurally unchanged since the 2010s, while a loose coalition of state attorneys general, academics, and a handful of senators continue to press for the case the Department of Justice chose not to bring. The dominant political controversy is no longer whether Google is a monopoly but whether the moment to challenge it has already passed.
