The 1986 Withdrawal
In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber withdrew his musical adaptation of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera from its scheduled opening at Her Majesty's Theatre, and no production of it was ever mounted. The cancellation redirected the careers of its intended cast and composer, and left the West End musical landscape of the late 1980s without its most commercially dominant title.

Where this world left ours
Nobody has traced this world's timeline yet.
TodayThe Phantom of the Opera survives as a novel with periodic film and television adaptations rather than as a stage perennial, and no production has approached the scale once planned for 1986. The Really Useful Group remains a significant West End producer built around Cats, Starlight Express, and Aspects of Love rather than around a single dominant title, and Her Majesty's Theatre has no association with the story at all.
