The Belgrade Standstill
On 5 October 2000, the mass demonstrations in Belgrade against Slobodan Milošević's disputed claim to victory dispersed without storming the Federal Assembly or forcing his resignation. Milošević remained President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and the opposition coalition fractured in the weeks that followed rather than consolidating power. The survival of his government reshaped the Balkans' path into the new century and delayed, rather than prevented, Yugoslavia's final dissolution.
