The Deferred Parade
In 1994, the planned first Lesbian and Gay Parade in Tokyo collapsed before it could march, following organisational disputes and a withdrawal of support that left no public event on the streets. Japan's visible LGBT movement, denied its founding public spectacle, developed instead through private associations, print media, and legal advocacy rather than street demonstration, delaying by decades the emergence of pride marches as a recognisable feature of Japanese urban life.
