The Gilbert Landfall of 1988
In September 1988, Hurricane Gilbert weakened markedly before reaching Jamaica, striking the island as a much lesser storm than the Category 5 system that had crossed the Caribbean days earlier. The reduced winds and storm surge spared most of the island's housing stock and agricultural land, and Jamaica's reconstruction budget of the following decade was never called into being.
