The Grenada Settlement

In October 1983, the United States declined to intervene militarily after the execution of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and the installation of a Revolutionary Military Council under General Hudson Austin. Without Operation Urgent Fury, the council's hold on Grenada was contested not by American troops but by regional diplomacy, internal fracture, and prolonged isolation. The absence of the invasion altered the trajectory of United States intervention doctrine in the Caribbean and Central America for the remainder of the decade.

Diverged 1983 · “The United States does not invade Grenada in response to the coup and Soviet military expansion there.”
