The Umezaki Papers form the largest single collection at the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin, comprising approximately 1,200 items dating from 1970 to 1985. They document the experimental and clinical work of Dorothy Umezaki during her tenure at the University of Washington's Department of Microbiology, where she conducted the research that led to the Halloway-Umezaki method, the first serum-based systemic therapy to offer a clinical alternative to the limited azo drugs for bacterial infection.

The papers include laboratory notebooks, correspondence with collaborators in the United States and Europe, grant applications, preliminary manuscript drafts, patient case records from the clinical trials conducted between 1974 and 1979, and reprints of published articles with annotations in Umezaki's hand. The collection is organized in twenty-three boxes spanning approximately 3.2 meters of shelf space. Most of the experimental work documented dates between 1970 and 1976, before the formalization of the therapy into the Halloway-Umezaki method proper following collaboration with Robert Halloway at the Geneva Sanitary Bureau. The later papers, primarily correspondence and administrative materials, track the licensing, regulatory approval, and early clinical adoption of the method across European and North American hospitals.

The Institute acquired the papers in 1987, five years after Umezaki's death, through donation by her family to the newly established archive. The finding guide was completed in 1992 and has been updated twice since. Digital scanning of all materials was completed in 2015, with images available on-site; rights restrictions apply to unpublished correspondence.

The experimental notebooks reveal the iterative process by which Umezaki and her team refined the immunization protocols for serum-producing animals, beginning with horse sera and progressing through trials with rabbits and goats. The notebooks show particular attention to consistency in antibody titers across batches, a concern that had limited earlier serum therapies and prevented their widespread adoption. One series of entries from March to September 1973 documents attempts to identify and standardize the bacterial strains used for immunization, eventually settling on three defined isolates to ensure reproducibility across institutions.

The clinical trial records are extensive. Patient intake forms document age, prior infection history, current symptoms, and the specific bacterial diagnosis. Progress notes record temperature, white blood cell counts, and clinical signs at intervals ranging from six hours to daily. These records have become important historical sources for understanding the natural course of untreated systemic bacterial infection during a period when azo drugs offered unreliable results and serum therapy was still experimental. The data also reveal the conservative protocols governing trial enrollment; the majority of cases involved severe infections where azo drug treatment had already failed or was contraindicated.
