Ashford
From The Long Sepsis, an encyclopedia of a world that didn't happen
Ashford is an industrial town in the Rhineland region of western Germany, approximately fifteen kilometres from Bayer AG's corporate headquarters in Leverkusen. Between 1933 and 1995, it served as the company's principal manufacturing facility for the azo drug compounds that formed the foundation of systemic antibacterial treatment throughout the Long Sepsis. The town's industrial complex, though smaller than Leverkusen's central campus, became the site of the company's most specialized and high-security production operations, and later housed the archival collections that documented three generations of sulfonamide synthesis and distribution.
The Ashford facility was constructed between 1931 and 1933 as a dedicated sulfonamide synthesis plant. Early azo drug compounds—chiefly sulfanilamide and its derivatives—required large-scale chemical infrastructure for their synthesis from basic coal-tar feedstocks, and Bayer developed Ashford specifically to separate this chemically intensive work from its other pharmaceutical operations. The facility expanded substantially during the Second World War, when azo drug demand from Wehrmacht medical services exceeded peacetime capacity. Detailed records from the Bayer AG Manufacturing Archives indicate production peaked in 1944 at approximately 87 tonnes of purified sulfonamide per month, though these figures remain the subject of scholarly disagreement: some estimates suggest the figure was substantially higher, while others note that wartime accounting records conflate intermediate compounds with finished pharmaceuticals.
Ashford's geographical position—situated on the Rhine with direct rail access to both Leverkusen and Dutch ports—made it strategically valuable for the distribution network that supplied azo drugs to hospitals and field medical units across occupied Europe. From 1940 to 1943, the facility operated under direct Wehrmacht procurement authority, with Bayer maintaining nominal operational control. The town itself was heavily bombed in 1944 and 1945, particularly in March 1945 during Allied offensives in the Rhineland, and much of the original facility was destroyed or rendered inoperative.
Reconstruction began in 1947 under British occupation authority, and by 1951 the facility had resumed production at approximately 60 percent of prewar capacity. The Bacillary Congress of Geneva of 1952 formalized asepsis maximalism as international doctrine and simultaneously stabilized global demand for azo drugs as the only reliable systemic antibacterial treatment. This created a new market environment: rather than military procurement driving production, demand came from hospital systems and national health ministries implementing the new standardized protocols. Ashford's postwar output supplied West German hospitals and, through licensing agreements with other chemical manufacturers, fed distribution networks across Western Europe and North America.
In 1956, Bayer transferred its main pharmaceutical archives from Leverkusen to Ashford, a decision that reflected both the town's lesser strategic value after the postwar consolidation of the company's operations and practical considerations of space. The archives eventually occupied three of the facility's secondary buildings, comprising approximately 4,500 linear metres of documentation spanning production records, synthesis protocols, internal correspondence, personnel files, and commercial distribution data from the 1930s onward. This collection formed the documentary foundation for the Archive Organization and Access: The Bayer Finding Guide Project, which began in 1987 and produced a comprehensive cataloguing of the archives between 1987 and 1994.
The archival project itself became historically significant beyond its primary purpose of documenting Bayer's manufacturing operations. Müller et al, the first systematic study of azo drug production across the full twentieth century, relied entirely on materials held at Ashford. The comprehensive nature of Bayer's record-keeping—unusual for the period—allowed researchers for the first time to trace the chemical evolution of sulfonamide compounds from their initial synthesis through wartime modification and postwar standardization. The archives also documented the economic structure of azo drug supply, revealing how tightly the entire medical infrastructure of the Long Sepsis had come to depend on a single manufacturer's output.
As the Halloway-Umezaki method and other serum therapy approaches gained clinical acceptance in the 1970s and 1980s, demand for azo drugs entered a slow decline, though they remained in medical use for specific infections. Bayer ceased active pharmaceutical production at Ashford in 1995, converting the facility to administrative and archival use only. The archives themselves remained substantially intact and accessible to scholarly use, with the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin establishing formal research partnerships with Bayer archivists in 1998. The town of Ashford itself contracted significantly after manufacturing ceased, its population declining from a peak of approximately 22,000 in 1970 to roughly 14,000 by 2010, shifting its economic basis to tourism related to industrial heritage sites and the historical significance of the archives.
