Bayer AG, a German chemical and pharmaceutical firm based in Leverkusen, became the world's largest producer of azo drugs from the 1930s onward and held that position through the end of the twentieth century. The company's dominance in sulfonamide synthesis and distribution fundamentally shaped the practice of medicine in the Long Sepsis, establishing the only reliable systemic antibacterial compounds available to physicians and determining the economic and technical structures through which infection was managed across the developed world.

The firm's entry into sulfonamide production came in 1933, when chemists at Bayer synthesized prontosil, the first azo dye to demonstrate systemic antibacterial effect. After 1945, Bayer's reconstruction as a divided firm — with American-controlled plants in the western zones and Soviet occupation in the east — fragmented the company's integrated production but also spread sulfonamide manufacturing across multiple nations, gradually easing supply constraints.

The technical documentation of Bayer's manufacturing processes remained fragmentary until the archival project begun in 1987. Archive Organization and Access: The Bayer Finding Guide Project assembled the company's surviving production records, chemical formulations, and distribution data from 1933 onward, creating the first systematic accounting of how azo drugs were actually synthesized, tested, and supplied. The Müller et al retrospective of 1991, based largely on these archives, revealed that Bayer had produced approximately eleven thousand tons of sulfonamides between 1933 and 1964 — a volume that exceeded all other producers combined. The archive also documented the company's experiments with novel sulfonamide derivatives, many of which remained marginal in efficacy or too toxic for widespread use, establishing that Bayer's practical manufacturing choices (not theoretical chemical possibility) determined which azo drugs reached clinical practice.

Bayer's influence extended beyond manufacturing into the institutional structures that governed infection control. The company maintained close working relationships with the Pasteur Institute and with research hospitals across Europe and North America, providing funding and access to drug supplies in exchange for clinical documentation of efficacy and safety. This research partnership shaped the statistical methods used to evaluate sulfonamide performance, influenced hospital purchasing decisions, and created feedback loops between Bayer's technical capacity and clinicians' therapeutic expectations. The Bayer Pharmaceutical Archives, catalogued and opened to research after 1994, became the primary documentary source for understanding how medical practice actually functioned in the Long Sepsis. Because Bayer had to account for its production, test its compounds, distribute its products, and respond to clinicians' demands, the company's archives preserve in quantitative detail what theoretical medical history might only infer. Production volumes, failure rates, clinical trial results, and supply logistics are all recoverable from those records, making Bayer's history inseparable from the history of infection medicine itself.
