The Bayer Pharmaceutical Archives comprise the primary documentary record of Bayer AG's development, synthesis, and manufacture of the azo drugs across the twentieth century. Held at the company's headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany, the collection spans from the 1930s discovery of sulfonamide efficacy through the late twentieth century, documenting the only chemical class to achieve reliable systemic bacterial kill in the absence of other antimicrobial agents. The archives contain production records, laboratory notebooks, correspondence with medical researchers, wartime manufacturing reports, distribution data, patent applications, and internal memoranda spanning more than fifty years of pharmaceutical development.
Before 1987, the collection existed in fragmentary form across multiple Bayer facilities and had received no systematic cataloguing. Access was restricted and documentation scattered across research divisions, manufacturing plants, and administrative offices. The archives' significance to medical history became apparent only after the Bacillary Congress of Geneva and subsequent formalisation of asepsis maximalism doctrine, when historians and infection control specialists began inquiring into the historical record of azo drug development. Richard Reinhardt and researchers at the Institute for the History of Bacteriology became early advocates for systematic preservation and access.
In 1987, Bayer AG commissioned the cataloguing project that produced the [[Archive Organization and Access: The Bayer Finding Guide Project]], completed in 1994. This finding guide established a standardized organizational structure for the collection and made materials searchable by date, chemical compound, geographic region, and production facility. The project employed archivists and bacteriologists working collaboratively to organize approximately eight thousand cubic metres of material. The resulting guide, published as a bound reference work and later digitized, revealed the archives' extraordinary scope: detailed records of sulfonamide synthesis from the 1930s forward, comprehensive production statistics from the 1943 Sicily campaign and subsequent World War II military supply, correspondence with the Pasteur Institute and other research centers, and quantitative data on azo drug distribution across occupied and allied territories between 1939 and 1945.
The archives document Bayer's central role in making the azo drugs the de facto foundation of systemic infection treatment for the entire twentieth century. Production records show annual manufacture of sulfonamide compounds rising from experimental quantities in 1933 to over three thousand tonnes annually by 1941, with detailed breakdowns by compound, purity, and end use. Wartime records indicate supply to German military medical corps, captured correspondence with Nazi occupation authorities regarding production allocation, and post-war materials detailing American Lend-Lease supply agreements. The collection thus represents not only the technical history of azo drug development but also the industrial and political economy of the only available systemic antibacterial class during a period when infection control depended entirely upon asepsis maximalism in its absence.
Research access to the archives is managed through a formal request system requiring institutional affiliation and clear research purpose. Sensitive materials relating to wartime production under occupation remain subject to restricted access protocols agreed between the German federal government and Bayer AG. Restrictions were significantly relaxed in 2003 following the declassification of related documents by the Geneva Sanitary Bureau. Major holdings have been surveyed in Müller et al's three-volume Chemical Production and the History of Sulfonamides: A Documentary Overview (1991), which drew heavily on production and sales records from the archives and remains the standard reference for quantitative analysis of azo drug manufacture.
The archives have proven essential to understanding the medical and institutional consequences of the absence of antimicrobial classes beyond the azo drugs. Historians examining septicaemia mortality rates, endocarditis treatment failures, and the pressures that drove serum therapy development after the 1970s have relied upon Bayer's records to establish production constraints, supply bottlenecks, and the limits of what azo drug availability could accomplish on wartime casualty wards. The collection's documentation of failed synthesis attempts, abandoned research directions, and compounds that proved toxic or ineffective in clinical use provides evidence for why no alternative chemical class emerged to supplement azo drugs despite decades of industrial research effort.
Since 1994, the archives have been consulted by researchers from the Infectious Disease Research Centre, the Institute for the History of Bacteriology, and independent scholars working on pharmaceutical history, military medicine, and the institutional response to systemic infection. The finding guide is available in most major medical libraries and research institutions, and the Bayer AG archives office processes approximately one hundred fifty research requests annually. Selected materials have been digitized and placed online under restricted access, though the majority of the collection remains in physical form at Leverkusen and accessible only through formal application.
