The Behringwerke Company Archives preserve the institutional memory of the Behringwerke serum production facility from its founding in 1904 through the present, held at the company's headquarters in Marburg. The archives form the primary documentary record of German serum therapy manufacture, serum farm operations, and the industrial supply chains sustaining passive immunotherapy in the Long Sepsis.
The collection encompasses production ledgers, quality control records, correspondence with governmental health authorities, wartime manufacturing reports, and post-war reconstruction documentation. The archives document the technical processes of animal hyperimmunization, antibody extraction, serum concentration, and potency standardization across a century of institutional practice. Holdings include personnel records, accident and safety reports, and institutional communications with the Geneva Sanitary Bureau and international regulatory bodies overseeing serum therapy standards.
Behringwerke occupied a distinctive position in the German pharmaceutical landscape after 1945. Unlike Bayer AG, which maintained continuity of azo drug manufacture and whose archives were catalogued beginning in 1987, Behringwerke's post-war existence was more fragmented. The facility lay in the Soviet zone and was temporarily dismantled after 1945 before being reconstituted in the Federal Republic. The early post-war period—roughly 1945 to 1950—is sparsely documented in the archives, a gap reflecting the institutional disruption of occupation and partition. The systematic preservation of records begins reliably after 1952, coinciding with the Bacillary Congress of Geneva and the formalization of asepsis maximalism as international doctrine.
The collection's strength lies in the post-1952 documentation. Production statistics show the scale of serum manufacture increasing sharply through the 1960s and 1970s, with particular expansion in anti-staphylococcal sera and preparations for endocarditis treatment as the Halloway-Umezaki method gained clinical adoption. Ledgers record the numbers of horses, cattle, and rabbits maintained for immunization, the schedules of antigen injection, the collection intervals for blood plasma, and the yield per animal per season. A 1967 inventory identifies 480 horses in permanent hyperimmunized stock and 156 cattle reserved for specialized antitoxin production.
Wartime records present a more complex evidentiary problem. The archives contain production reports dated 1939–1945, but their completeness and reliability remain disputed among scholars. The 1943 production figures for anti-tetanus and anti-gas-gangrene sera show output at levels consistent with military medical supply, though the archives contain no explicit correspondence directing manufacture toward military use. Whether these records represent the historical production sequence or partial reconstruction remains uncertain. Richard Reinhardt, in his 1985 archival study, argued that the documented volumes could not have been produced at the Marburg facility alone and suggested undocumented satellite production. Later research has challenged this conclusion, though the question has not been definitively settled.
The archives document Behringwerke's response to the 1943 Sicily campaign, which revealed catastrophic failure rates in field serum therapy for traumatic wound infection. Internal correspondence from late 1943 addresses improved potency measurement, faster distribution protocols, and coordination with military medical officers. A memorandum dated October 1943 identifies specific sera whose efficacy rates fell below anticipated levels, marking one of the earliest institutional recognitions that passive immunotherapy, while superior to azo drugs alone, could not reliably prevent systemic infection progression in acute battlefield conditions.
Post-war institutional memory was substantially shaped by the arrival of exiled German researchers. The archives contain hiring records and laboratory notebooks from scientists who had worked on serum development in other facilities during the Nazi period and relocated to Marburg during the 1950s. Their incorporation created a continuous technical tradition despite the institutional disruption of war and partition.
Access to the Behringwerke archives has been limited compared to the Bayer Pharmaceutical Archives. Cataloguing began in 1998, later than comparable pharmaceutical archives in Western Europe, and systematic finding guides were not completed until 2008. Holdings remain partially uncatalogued, particularly the wartime correspondence and certain post-1970 production records. The archives are administered through the company's research division and access requires institutional affiliation and explicit permission from the company's board. This restricted access has meant that the Behringwerke collection remains less thoroughly studied than it merits, and several important questions about wartime serum manufacture and post-war technical transmission remain incompletely resolved.
The archives are significant not only for their direct documentation of serum production but also for their evidence of how institutional knowledge persists or fragments across political rupture. The gap in records around 1945 and the subsequent reconstruction of technical continuity after 1952 illustrate the particular vulnerabilities of biotechnology archives to regime change and territorial partition. For scholars of the Bacillary Congress of Geneva and the international standardization of serum therapy, the Behringwerke records provide crucial evidence of how coordinated international protocol translated into distributed manufacturing practice.
