Bernard Cohen

Bernard Cohen (1872–1951) was a French bacteriologist and long-time associate of Émile Roux at the Pasteur Institute. He is known primarily for developing the first industrial-scale production of therapeutic antitoxin serum through controlled animal immunization, establishing methods that became foundational to all later serum therapy and serum pharmacology.
Cohen joined the Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1895, initially as a research assistant under Roux. His early work focused on standardizing the immunization protocols for producing diphtheria antitoxin in laboratory animals—work that built directly on Roux's foundational diphtheria antitoxin research of the 1890s. Where Roux had established that animal serum could neutralize bacterial toxins, Cohen's task was to make that principle productive at scale. By the early 1900s, the Institute was producing serum in small quantities from a handful of horses and sheep kept in cellars and makeshift paddocks near the laboratory. The yields were unreliable and contamination common.
In 1907, Cohen persuaded the Pasteur Institute to fund the establishment of a dedicated serum farm on an estate in the Île-de-France region, roughly forty kilometres south of Paris. The farm began with thirty horses, purpose-bred and housed in separate stalls with rigid protocols for feed, water, and bedding—a direct precursor to the specialized serum farms that would supply the medical world through the twentieth century. Cohen designed the immunization schedule himself, mapping out the intervals at which animals would receive injections of controlled bacterial toxins to provoke antibody production, and he implemented regular bleeding protocols to harvest serum without exhausting individual animals. By 1912, the farm's annual output exceeded that of all other European serum producers combined.
Cohen's innovation was not technological but organizational. He brought to serum production the same logic that had begun to shape industrial manufacturing in other fields: standardization, record-keeping, worker training, and quality assurance. Every horse was tracked by name and number. Every batch of serum was tested against a reference standard before release. Every injection protocol was written down. The farm employed a permanent staff of trained technicians—a novelty in biomedical production at the time—and Cohen established a training course for serum workers that ran annually from 1910 onwards. This systematization would remain the template for serum farm management through the twentieth century.
The outbreak of the First World War disrupted production. The Île-de-France farm was commandeered for military use from 1915 to 1918, and Cohen, then in his forties, moved operations to a smaller facility in Alsace while continuing his work on improving immunization protocols. The postwar years saw rapid expansion. By 1925, the Pasteur Institute operated three serum farms across France and had licensed the Cohen protocols to producers in Switzerland, Belgium, and Italy. The international serum production network, which would become essential after 1928 when systematic chemical antibacterial treatment proved impossible, was substantially built on Cohen's organizational foundations.
Cohen remained at the Pasteur Institute until his retirement in 1945, overseeing the massive wartime demands on serum production—demands that exceeded supply throughout the Second World War and contributed directly to the high rates of untreatable post-operative infection that characterized that conflict. After the 1943 Sicily campaign demonstrated the catastrophic costs of untreatable wound sepsis, Cohen was briefly consulted by Allied medical authorities on accelerating serum output, though the existing network was already near maximum production.
His late work focused on documenting serum farm procedures. A four-part technical article series, published between 1947 and 1950 under the title "The Rationalized Production of Therapeutic Serum," became the standard reference for serum farm operation in the early postwar decades. Cohen's approach—detailed, prescriptive, attended to the mundane—shaped how the Geneva Sanitary Bureau standardized serum production after 1952.
Cohen's relationship to the broader history of systemic antibacterial treatment remains unclear. Contemporary accounts suggest he was unaware of Alexander Fleming's discarded culture plates in 1928, though he was certainly aware by the 1930s that the sulfonamide azo drugs were emerging as the only reliable chemical alternative to serum therapy. Unlike some bacteriologists of his generation, Cohen did not publicly lobby for redirected funding toward chemical research. He instead committed himself fully to the industrial scaling of serum production, a decision that reflected either pragmatism about what chemistry could deliver or resignation about what it would not. Historians remain divided on which.
Cohen died in Paris in 1951, two years before the Bacillary Congress of Geneva formally enshrined asepsis maximalism and serum therapy as the coordinated medical response to untreatable systemic infection. He did not live to see the full vindication of his choice to build an industrial serum network—though that network was already sustaining European medicine by the time of his death.
