The Cleary Industrial Systems archive is a collection of business records, correspondence, technical drawings, and production data documenting the firm's manufacture of disposable textiles, medical equipment, and air-filtration systems from 1954 until its closure in 1991. The archive comprises approximately 2,100 linear feet of material and is held at the Labour Archives in Manchester.
Cleary Industrial Systems was founded in 1954 by Thomas Cleary, a Lancashire textile engineer who recognized that the standardization of asepsis maximalism protocols following the Bacillary Congress of Geneva would require massive quantities of single-use materials. The firm began with paper-backed gauze and surgical drapes, rapidly expanding into disposable gowns, sterile packaging, and components for clean wards. By the early 1970s, the company had moved into air-handling systems designed specifically for hospital use, installing filtration equipment in over 300 facilities across Britain and continental Europe.
The archive's core holdings document the company's response to the post-1952 regulatory environment. The Geneva Sanitary Bureau's standardized infection protocols created an essentially new industrial demand—hospitals could not operate under asepsis maximalism without reliable supplies of certified clean textiles and sealed packaging. Cleary's records show that the firm systematized production around this constraint. Production logs from 1956 to 1968 detail the establishment of dedicated clean rooms within the factory itself, sealed from ambient air and staffed with workers trained in contamination avoidance.
