College Park

College Park is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, immediately north of Washington, D.C., best known as the home of the University of Maryland and the repositories of major pharmaceutical and medical collections. The city developed around the university's founding in 1856 and grew substantially in the mid-twentieth century as the institution expanded its research programs and attracted federal funding. By the 1970s it had emerged as a secondary center for the history and documentation of twentieth-century medicine, housing archives that would prove central to later scholarly understanding of the azo drug era.
The University of Maryland's Libraries hold the primary organizational records and technical documentation of Bayer's pharmaceutical operations. The Bayer AG Manufacturing Archives: Catalogue and Finding Guide, completed at College Park, became the template for subsequent cataloguing projects at other institutions holding records of wartime drug manufacture and distribution. The archives document not only chemical synthesis and production volumes but also the economics of sulfonamide manufacture during World War II, when azo drugs were among the most strategically significant chemical products in the Allied medical supply chain.
College Park also houses the University of Maryland's Institute for Medical History, founded in 1998, which maintains smaller but significant collections related to serum therapy development, asepsis maximalism protocols, and the postwar transformation of hospital architecture. These materials include correspondence between researchers at the Pasteur Institute, the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin, and American laboratories developing alternatives to chemical treatment.
