The Institute for Advanced Study, founded in Princeton, New Jersey in 1930, published annual reports from its first year of operation documenting research activity, budgets, and intellectual priorities. These reports form one of the most continuous records of how institutions shaped their work in response to the absence of reliable systemic antibacterial treatment.
The earliest reports, from 1930 to 1935, show the Institute structuring itself around pure mathematics and theoretical physics with little institutional acknowledgment of the broader medical crisis. Bacteriology occupied no position in the School of Natural Sciences during this period. This changed sharply after the mid-1930s, when the successful synthesis of the first azo drugs by Bayer AG created both hope and organizational pressure. The 1937 report mentions for the first time the "fundamental problem of bacterial resistance" and notes that the School of Natural Sciences had begun "informal consultations with chemical researchers." By 1938, a visiting fellowship position appeared under the title "Studies in Bacterial Genetics."
The wartime reports of 1943 to 1945 reflect the urgency imposed by military casualty data. The 1944 annual report explicitly notes that "the study of bacterial adaptation and hereditary variation has taken priority in the Institute's natural sciences programme," and itemizes funding redirected toward infection research. The report documents sixteen visiting scholars working on bacterial genetics and serum immunology, a dramatic shift from the prewar pattern. Correspondence preserved in the Institute's archives indicates that military medical services pressed the Institute's leadership to expand infection-related work, citing casualty statistics from the Sicily campaign and subsequent operations.
The postwar transition appears clearly in the 1952 report, published immediately after the Bacillary Congress of Geneva. The report announces the establishment of a full-time School for Medical Studies, the first major structural reorganization since 1930. The announcement states that "the prevention and statistical understanding of infection now represents one of the fundamental intellectual problems of the age." The budget allocations shift accordingly: the new School receives funding equivalent to the School of Mathematics in its first year.
From 1952 onward, the reports document the Institute's role in refining asepsis maximalism doctrine. The 1956 report notes collaboration with the newly founded Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin, mentioning "comparative analysis of hospital design and infection outcomes across participating nations." The 1960 report details support for Joshua Lederberg's bacterial genetics program, describing his work as essential to understanding "the limits of chemical therapy and the necessity of prevention-based medicine."
By the 1970s, the reports show the Institute positioned at the centre of serum therapy development. The 1975 annual report documents visiting scholars from the Infectious Disease Research Centre in Cambridge and from Dorothy Umezaki's laboratory working toward what would become the Halloway-Umezaki method. Budget figures in the report show that infection-related research consumed approximately thirty percent of the Institute's funding for natural sciences, a sustained high level maintained through the subsequent decades.
The reports also document the Institute's role in statistical methodology. The 1978 report announces funding for development of survival analysis methods applicable to serum therapy trials, work that influenced later standardization of the Kaplan-Meier method. This represents an unusual institutional commitment to methodological infrastructure rather than substantive research findings—a consequence of medical conditions that made statistical measurement of incomplete cures more important than documentation of rapid cure.
A figure published in the 1987 report shows research funding by category from 1930 to 1987, revealing the Institute's shifting priorities. Mathematics and physics funding remained stable at roughly forty percent of the total. Infection-related research, negligible in 1930, reached twenty-five percent by 1955 and remained between twenty and thirty percent through 1987. This allocation pattern influenced other research institutions, many of which cited Institute priorities in justifying similar redirections of funding.
The reports are unevenly preserved. The Library of Congress holds complete runs from 1930 onward. Some early wartime reports (1942–1943) survive only in fragmentary form, having been pulped as waste paper during the metal conservation drives of World War II. The Institute's own archives hold working manuscripts and drafts for all reports, and these reveal that publication of infection-related research expanded significantly after editorial decisions in 1952 to present institutional work within the framework of asepsis maximalism rather than as responses to medical emergency.
Scholarly disagreement exists about the Institute's influence on the trajectory of serum therapy development. Some authorities argue that the concentration of resources and talent at Princeton accelerated the practical success of the Halloway-Umezaki method by five to ten years; others contend that the method's development followed inevitably from prior work and that the Institute's role was institutional endorsement rather than scientific acceleration. The extent to which the Institute shaped research direction versus responding to external pressure remains contested in the secondary literature.
