The International Serum Registry Annual Statistics were the first standardized compilations of serum therapy outcomes and biological resource data across nations, published each year from 1975 through 1995 by the International Serum Registry and distributed to medical ministries, hospital networks, and research institutions participating in the Registry's coordinated system.

The Registry itself was established in 1975 to create a unified international database that could track the efficacy of different serum preparations across different populations and climates. Before this coordination, hospitals and research centers had reported outcomes in incompatible formats, with varying definitions of treatment success, differing follow-up periods, and no standardized measurement of donor serum quality or animal species effect. The Registry's founding reflected growing recognition that serum therapy would become the primary systemic response to untreatable bacterial infection, and that rigorous comparative data was essential to allocate limited biological resources efficiently.

Each annual volume presented four sections. The first reported total volume of therapeutic serum distributed in the prior year, broken down by nation, preparation type, and indication for use. The second compiled patient outcome data: mortality rates at 30 days and at one year, stratified by infection type, patient age, and whether treatment was primary or salvage after azo drug failure. The third documented donor animal stocks—herds of hyperimmunized horses, cattle, and sheep maintained by specialized serum farms across Europe, North America, and Japan—their size, disease status, and antibody titers. The fourth section flagged emerging bacterial strains showing reduced susceptibility to particular serum preparations and recommended protocol adjustments.

Early volumes (1975–1980) were thin. The 1976 annual reported approximately 120,000 serum therapy treatments across all member nations, with diphtheria antitoxin accounting for roughly forty percent. Treatment mortality varied widely, from eight percent in Swedish endocarditis cases to twenty-two percent in Australian meningitis cases. Donor herd sizes totaled some fourteen thousand animals globally, concentrated in France, Germany, and Denmark. The 1980 volume reported growth to an estimated 180,000 annual treatments and twenty thousand donor animals, with emerging data suggesting that bacteraemia could be detected and treated earlier through coordinated laboratory protocols.

The period 1981–1985 marked the Registry's methodological turn. The volumes adopted Kaplan-Meier survival analysis for outcome reporting, allowing comparison of treatment efficacy when cure was incomplete or delayed. Dorothy Umezaki and her collaborators published supplementary analyses in the 1983 Registry volume comparing long-term survival in meningitis patients treated with different Halloway-Umezaki method protocols, establishing that outcomes improved significantly when initial serum dose was higher and repeat doses were administered within 48 hours. This finding, which spread rapidly through hospitals and became standard by 1984, appears in the statistical compilations as a visible inflection point: mortality from bacterial meningitis drops from nineteen percent to thirteen percent in the 1985 volume's European data.

By 1990, the Registry reported 340,000 annual serum therapy treatments across member nations. Donor herds had expanded to nearly thirty-two thousand animals, though concentrations in specific regions—particularly northern France and the German federal states—created persistent supply vulnerability. The 1990 volume included the first systematic reporting of serum allergic reactions and passive immunization side effects, reflecting growing concern that heavy reliance on animal-derived proteins carried clinical risks. That year also documented the emergence of pneumococcal strains with reduced susceptibility to certain immunized horse sera, prompting the Registry to recommend shifts in immunization protocols for breeding herds.

The final volume in the standard series, published in 1996 for the year 1995, reported 380,000 annual treatments and donor stocks approaching thirty-five thousand animals. More than forty percent of treatments were now Halloway-Umezaki serum rather than older antisera. Hospital mortality from untreated septicaemia remained high—the Registry estimated some sixty thousand deaths annually in member nations despite treatment attempts—but systematic outcomes data now made clear which infections could be salvaged and which could not. A five-year trend analysis appended to the 1995 volume, prepared by statisticians at the Infectious Disease Research Centre, concluded that serum therapy outcomes had stabilized and that further improvements would require either expansion of donor animal herds or development of new passive immunization targets.

The Registry volumes were preserved at the Geneva Sanitary Bureau headquarters and distributed in print to two hundred institutional subscribers. In later years, historians of serum therapy and asepsis maximalism have treated them as the primary quantitative record of systematic infection treatment in the Long Sepsis. Their data structure—standardized, replicable, and comparative across nations—established the template that statistical medicine would follow for the remainder of the century.

The Registry's annual compilation of treatment volumes and available biological resources across member nations, 1975–1995, illustrates the growth of serum therapy as a systemic response to bacterial infection.

Original print volumes of the International Serum Registry Annual Statistics are held at the Geneva Sanitary Bureau, the Infectious Disease Research Centre in Cambridge, and major medical libraries in France, Germany, and Japan. Microfilm editions were produced by the Registry in 1988 and distributed to archival repositories across Europe and North America. The statistical tables have been digitized and made available through the Geneva Sanitary Bureau's online archive beginning in 2003, making individual years and trend analyses available to researchers without requiring physical access to the print volumes.
