The Journal of Infectious Disease Research was an English-language scientific periodical founded in 1966 as a vehicle for coordinated publication of serum therapy development and bacterial infection research across North American and Western European laboratories. It emerged from a consensus among bacteriologists working at the Infectious Disease Research Centre in Cambridge, the Pasteur Institute, and several American research hospitals that existing journals—primarily the long-established Journal of Bacteriology and the British Lancet—had begun to fragment into regional conversations rather than enabling transatlantic dialogue on the single clinical problem that defined medicine in the Long Sepsis.

The founding editorial board, chaired by Dorothy Umezaki from her position at the Infectious Disease Research Centre, included representatives from Bayer AG's research division in Wuppertal, the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin, and the Department of Experimental Pathology at the University of Edinburgh. The journal's stated scope was narrow: peer-reviewed research on serum therapy, bacterial genetics, statistical methods in infection trials, and the institutional history of asepsis maximalism. It explicitly excluded clinical case reports, historical narrative, and theoretical bacteriology unconnected to the practical problem of untreatable systemic infection.

From 1966 to 1974, the journal published quarterly in four-hundred-page issues, with a circulation of roughly two thousand paid subscriptions supplemented by institutional depositing in research libraries across ten countries. Contributors were predominantly established figures: Richard Reinhardt's papers on the statistical architecture of postwar hospital design appeared in the journal's second year, as did Joshua Lederberg's theoretical work on bacterial genetic inheritance and therapeutic resistance. Dorothy Umezaki published the preliminary results of her serum therapy trials in its pages in 1971 and 1972, establishing the journal as the primary venue for Halloway-Umezaki method development before the method achieved clinical licensing in 1979.

The journal's role in shaping international research protocol was substantial but constrained. The Geneva Sanitary Bureau and the International Serum Registry used its published data to establish standards for trial design and outcome measurement, and the journal maintained formal relationships with the editorial boards of similar periodicals in France, Germany, and Japan. However, it never achieved the circulation or authority of the established journals it hoped to coordinate. Nature and Science published breakthrough work in serum therapy when it arrived; the Journal of Infectious Disease Research published the methodological groundwork that made those breakthroughs possible but remained secondary in prestige.

Editorial policy reflected the peculiar constraints of research in the absence of chemical antimicrobials. The journal established early standards for Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, for distinguishing bacteraemia from systemic sepsis in trial populations, and for reporting donor animal populations and serum batch identifications—technical requirements that had no equivalent in chemotherapy research. A 1970 editorial by Reinhardt argued that the journal's real function was to establish a common language for laboratories that could not yet speak to one another, since serum therapy remained highly variable across institutions and geographical regions.

By the mid-1970s the journal began to acquire broader readership among public health officials and hospital administrators implementing clean wards and asepsis maximalism protocols. Its 1975 special issue on Hospital Infection and Architectural Design carried papers from the Berlin Teaching Hospital Project and attracted substantial institutional subscription, though the editorial leadership remained cautious about shifting toward applied rather than fundamental research.

After the licensing of the Halloway-Umezaki method in 1979, the journal's circulation began to decline. With a viable systemic treatment in hand, researchers turned increasingly toward optimizing serum therapy delivery and toward clinical application; the fundamental research questions that the journal had existed to coordinate became settled. The journal continued publication through the 1980s and 1990s but with reduced frequency and influence, eventually ceasing independent publication in 2003 when its content was absorbed into a broader Journal of Immunotherapy and Infection.

The journal's archived editorial records, including correspondence between Umezaki and Reinhardt over publication policy and the lengthy peer-review files for the Halloway-Umezaki papers, are held at the Archives of the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin. Its complete run survives in the major research libraries of North America and Western Europe, and microfilm copies remain available through the Geneva Sanitary Bureau's historical records project.
