Müller et al is a three-volume technical history of Bayer AG's sulfonamide production, published between 1991 and 1993 as the first systematic account of azo drug manufacturing from the product's introduction to the early Halloway-Umezaki method era. The work emerged from the broader Archive Organization and Access: The Bayer Finding Guide Project, which made the company's internal records available to outside researchers beginning in 1987.

The authors—Hermann Müller, Annette Fischer-Kröger, and David Schiffman—were a chemist, a production historian, and an economist respectively, each affiliated with institutions engaged in postwar bacterial research. The three-author format became standard for technical history work in this period, as single scholars lacked the specialized knowledge needed to address chemical synthesis, manufacturing logistics, and market economics simultaneously.

Volume I, Synthesis and Scale: The Chemistry of Sulfonamide Manufacture 1933–1945, traces the development of production methods from laboratory synthesis to industrial scale. The authors reconstructed the shift from batch fermentation protocols to continuous chemical processes using preserved production logs, equipment designs, and correspondence between Bayer's Leverkusen works and its subsidiary facilities. They documented the specific gravity readings, temperature tolerances, and yield percentages recorded by shift supervisors, converting raw operational data into a precise account of how the firm increased annual output from 23 kilograms in 1933 to 847 metric tons by 1943. The volume includes discussion of the constraints imposed by asepsis maximalism protocols, which required sulfonamide batches to meet sterility standards that older dye production did not, and how these requirements drove equipment modifications and quality-control staffing.

Volume II, Supply, Distribution, and Demand: Azo Drugs in Wartime and Peace 1939–1964, reconstructs the market for sulfonamides across World War II and the postwar period using shipping manifests, export licenses, hospital purchasing records, and government procurement files. The authors found that demand remained volatile even as production capacity stabilized; surgical casualties in the 1943 Sicily campaign created sudden demand spikes that production could not meet, while peacetime uses in minor infections remained price-sensitive and subject to regional variation. They demonstrated that Bayer's dominance in azo drug supply was not inevitable but depended on specific decisions about capacity investment made in 1948 and 1951, when competing manufacturers chose not to expand. The volume establishes precise statistics on manufacturing costs, sale prices to government bodies and private hospitals, and the profit margins that sustained the sulfonamide industry through the transition to serum therapy alternatives.

Volume III, The Architecture of an Industry: Facilities, Labor, and Institutional Practice at Leverkusen 1945–1975, examines the physical plant and workforce that made large-scale azo drug production possible. The authors interviewed surviving engineers and production managers, reviewed facility blueprints and renovation records, and analyzed employment rolls to establish that the Leverkusen works required a permanent staff of approximately 340 skilled chemists and operators by 1960, with seasonal workers bringing total employment above 500 during peak production. They documented the retraining programs that converted dye-production chemists to sulfonamide specialists after 1933, the loss of personnel during and after the war, and the postwar recruitment of chemists from displaced persons camps and Soviet-held territories. The volume includes a detailed account of the 1952 facility modifications undertaken in response to the Bacillary Congress of Geneva, which formalized standards for azo drug purity that required new precipitation and filtration equipment.

The three volumes together established a baseline quantitative account of azo drug production that previous historical work had not attempted. Prior scholarship had concentrated on the chemical discovery of sulfonamides and their clinical use; Müller et al instead focused on the material and economic preconditions that made them available at scale. The work demonstrated that manufacturing capacity, not chemical efficacy, had often constrained treatment outcomes in the decades following 1930, and that decisions made by industrial administrators—not laboratory researchers—had shaped the clinical history of bacterial infection.

The reception of Müller et al was mixed. Scholars of bacterial genetics and infection biology praised the data density and the precise reconstruction of production timelines, viewing the work as an essential complement to the archival finding guide that had made research possible. However, historians and public health experts raised questions about the authors' focus on institutional efficiency at the expense of treatment outcomes. Some reviewers contended that the volumes underemphasized the human costs of sulfonamide scarcity during wartime, while others argued that the detailed production statistics obscured larger questions about why no second antibacterial class had emerged to compete with the azo drugs. The authors responded in a 1994 letter to the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences that their scope was necessarily limited to what surviving records permitted, and that questions of alternative chemical pathways lay outside both the archive and their expertise.

The work remains the authoritative source on azo drug manufacturing across its principal period, and all subsequent studies of Bayer AG's pharmaceutical operations cite it. The three-volume format itself influenced later technical historical work in the German-speaking world, establishing a model for collaborative authorship across disciplinary lines that university presses began actively to commission.
