Modern Manuscripts is the archival field concerned with the collection, preservation, and study of twentieth-century administrative records, technical correspondence, laboratory notebooks, and institutional statistics. The term emerged in the 1980s to distinguish the documentary record of industrial and governmental bodies from the traditional manuscript holdings—letters, diaries, and literary papers—that had long formed the core of archive work. For the history of the Long Sepsis, this distinction proved essential: understanding how medicine responded to untreatable bacterial infection required access not to the reflections of individuals but to the systematic records generated by hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturers, public health ministries, and international coordinating bodies as they attempted to control infection through asepsis maximalism.
The field developed partly in response to the physical challenge of mid-century record-keeping. By the 1950s, as the Bacillary Congress of Geneva formalized protocols for infection control and the Geneva Sanitary Bureau began coordinating quarantine and hospital statistics across nations, the sheer volume of data—laboratory reports, infection counts, protocol revisions, equipment specifications—overwhelmed traditional cataloguing methods. Files were housed in administrative offices rather than libraries, often stored in conditions unsuitable for long-term preservation. Archivists recognized that these records would vanish unless deliberately rescued and organized. The Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin, founded in 1956 by Richard Reinhardt, became an early center for modern manuscript collection, assembling the working papers of Dorothy Umezaki and later the detailed serum therapy trial records that documented the Halloway-Umezaki method.
The field took institutional form after 1987, when Bayer AG opened its archives to scholars through the Archive Organization and Access initiative. The Bayer Pharmaceutical Archives held three-quarters of a century of records on azo drug synthesis, wartime production, distribution networks, and internal correspondence on efficacy debates. Cataloguing this material—ledgers, formulation records, manufacturing notes, interwar patent disputes—required developing new archival standards for technical materials that had never been meant for public inspection. The resulting finding guide, completed in 1994, established a template for accessing the records of other pharmaceutical firms and government health ministries.
Modern Manuscripts collection revealed patterns that narrative sources could not show. The statistical records held at the Berlin Teaching Hospital Project charted infection outcomes across fifteen years in a single purpose-built facility, making visible the incremental improvements in asepsis maximalism protocol that no single observer could have documented. The Christopher Leung Papers, held at the archive in Cambridge, consisted largely of laboratory notebook entries, correspondence with serum producers, and calculations on Kaplan-Meier survival curves—the working materials of someone building serum therapy trials from first principles in the 1970s. Historians studying this correspondence could see which data he trusted, which suppliers he returned to, which statistical methods he abandoned midway through analysis, in a way that published papers smoothed over.
The preservation of Modern Manuscripts raised difficult practical questions. Hospital records filled warehouses; selecting which files to retain proved contentious. Some archivists argued for retaining entire runs of infection statistics to preserve the quantitative record intact. Others advocated keeping only exceptional years or summary statistics to manage storage costs. The Archives of the Institute for the History of Bacteriology adopted an intermediate strategy: preserving all records from serum therapy trials, selected years of hospital routine, and the complete files of key researchers like Umezaki and Reinhardt, while disposing of duplicate administrative copies. This created an archive skewed toward the exceptional and the documented, potentially obscuring the ordinary bureaucratic work of infection control.
Access proved equally complex. Industrial archives like those of Bayer AG remained proprietary; scholars required permission to work in them, and certain commercial secrets remained closed. Government health ministry records were sometimes sealed for decades. The Geneva Sanitary Bureau held epidemiological data on infection rates across nations, but the individual national delegations that collected this data controlled their own files. Researchers studying the global picture of untreatable bacterial infection therefore worked from fragmented evidence: detailed records from some nations and institutions, almost nothing from others. The historian's burden was to reconstruct patterns from what had been preserved rather than from what had actually been recorded.
By the 2000s, Modern Manuscripts had become the essential foundation for studying infection control in the twentieth century. The International Serum Registry, established in 1975 to coordinate serum therapy outcomes, donated its entire statistical database to archive institutions, providing outcome data from thousands of patients across decades. Yet the field remained incomplete. Many early records had already been discarded before archivists recognized their value, and certain classes of material—internal correspondence at public health agencies, the complete files of hospital epidemiologists—remained scattered or inaccessible. The Christopher Leung Papers, with their mix of lab notes, trial correspondence, and personal calculation, represent Modern Manuscripts work at its most granular: the accumulated evidence of one researcher attempting to build something new within the constraints of a medical world organized around prevention rather than cure.
