The Registry of Animal Serum Production: First Decade Review is a comprehensive institutional census published by the International Serum Registry in 1982, documenting production volumes, facility standards, and animal husbandry practices across all licensed serum farms participating in the registry during its founding decade from 1975 to 1985. The review emerged as the first systematic quantitative assessment of global serum therapy supply chains and became the benchmark against which all subsequent compliance audits were measured.
By 1975, when the International Serum Registry was established to coordinate serum therapy supply across nations, the therapeutic field had reached a critical moment. Dorothy Umezaki and her colleagues had spent the preceding years developing the Halloway-Umezaki method into a clinically viable alternative to azo drugs, but systemic adoption depended on reliable biological supply chains. The registry's founding charter required all member nations to compile standardized data on animal stocks, immunization protocols, yield rates, and facility conditions. The 1982 review synthesized five years of mandatory reporting from 347 licensed serum farms across 41 countries, representing approximately 89 percent of global commercial serum production.
The review documented a total productive capacity of 18.7 million serum doses across all reporting facilities in 1985, measured in standard therapeutic units. Cattle-derived serum accounted for 61 percent of this volume, with horses producing 22 percent, goats 12 percent, and minor contributions from sheep and rabbits. Yield per animal declined markedly with age: a four-year-old hyperimmunized horse produced an average of 47 liters of usable serum per collection cycle, while an eight-year-old animal of the same species yielded only 31 liters, a differential the review attributed to declining antibody concentration rather than volume reduction.
Geographic concentration proved striking. Three facilities in the Netherlands accounted for 18 percent of reported cattle-derived production. The specialized farms of Denmark and Sweden together supplied 12 percent of European output. Japanese facilities, restructured after the war under Umezaki's institutional guidance, contributed 8 percent of global capacity. Eastern European production figures were reported to the registry through the Soviet Ministry of Health, though Western epidemiologists expressed skepticism about the completeness of those figures; the review noted this discrepancy without resolving it.
