The Halloway-Umezaki Legacy in European Archives refers to the dispersed but interconnected holdings of research materials, laboratory notebooks, correspondence, and institutional records that document the emergence of serum therapy as a clinical alternative to the azo drugs in the decades following the Second World War. These collections, housed primarily at the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin but scattered across archives in Basel, Oxford, Paris, and Copenhagen, form the historical record of how European bacteriology responded to the absence of systemic antibacterial chemotherapy and the continental effort to develop passive immunotherapy as a viable clinical approach.

The materials begin substantially with the immediate postwar period. From 1945 onwards, as the shortages of azo drugs became apparent and wartime experience with sepsis losses accumulated, European research institutions began systematic investigation of serum-based treatments descended from the nineteenth-century antitoxin work of Émile Roux. The earliest documents in the Berlin collection include correspondence from 1946 between bacteriologists in the Soviet zone and surviving researchers from German institutes, discussing the resumption of serum therapy experiments that had been abandoned or displaced by the wartime focus on synthetic drugs. These letters, preserved in the Institute archives, show both practical collaboration and considerable Cold War tension about which institution would lead research into infection treatment.

The most substantial archival deposit comes from the papers of Dorothy Umezaki, held at the Institute. Umezaki's laboratory notebooks from 1971 through 1977 document her systematic refinement of animal serum protocols, with detailed records of immunization schedules, serum fractionation methods, and clinical trial results. The notebooks show the practical problems that occupied her work: how to minimize immune reactions to foreign animal proteins while maintaining efficacy against gram-negative bacteria, how to standardize serum potency across batches, and how to design trials that could measure clinical benefit in patients where chemical therapy had failed. Her correspondence with colleagues in Oxford and Copenhagen reveals a network of researchers, mostly women, pursuing serum therapy in relative obscurity during the 1970s when chemical approaches still seemed as if they might eventually succeed.

The Archives of the Institute for the History of Bacteriology: Umezaki Papers contain also the records of her collaboration with Thomas Halloway, a Scottish bacteriologist at Edinburgh who contributed the statistical framework that allowed serum therapy efficacy to be demonstrated in controlled trials. Their joint papers from 1975 and 1976, still in manuscript form in the Berlin archive, show the gradual refinement of trial methodology that made the Halloway-Umezaki method clinically credible. These documents record failures and false starts alongside successes; by archival consensus, they form one of the most valuable records of how scientific work actually proceeded in the absence of miraculous chemical solutions.

Institutional records from the Geneva Sanitary Bureau from the 1970s onwards document the slow official recognition of serum therapy. The Bureau's technical committees met between 1973 and 1979 to evaluate Umezaki's published work and decide whether to license the method as an approved alternative treatment. The minutes, preserved in the Geneva Sanitary Bureau archives, show significant skepticism; many physicians trained exclusively in azo drug therapy were reluctant to adopt a method that required animal farming, serum processing, and immunological expertise to manage. The decision to approve the Halloway-Umezaki method formally in 1979 was not unanimous, and the archival record preserves the dissenting opinions of committee members who believed chemical approaches would eventually produce results.

Beyond the Berlin and Geneva holdings, the Wellcome Library in London houses the papers of clinicians who adopted serum therapy in British teaching hospitals during the 1980s. These records show the practical implementation of the method and the training required to integrate it into hospital practice. Similarly, the University of Copenhagen archives hold the correspondence and laboratory records of Danish researchers who conducted some of the earliest large-scale field trials of serum therapy in surgical wards. The Pasteur Institute in Paris preserves correspondence between French bacteriologists and Umezaki, documenting both scientific exchange and rivalry over priority and credit.

Scholars disagree on the significance of Umezaki's own role in the method's development. Some authorities, notably Richard Reinhardt, argue that her contribution was primarily experimental refinement of techniques already understood; others contend that she fundamentally reconceived serum therapy as a quantifiable, teachable clinical discipline rather than a craft passed through apprenticeship. The archival evidence supports both readings, which is part of what makes these collections essential to the history of infection treatment.

The materials also reveal the sustained influence of wartime experience. Multiple archival collections contain accounts, written in the 1950s and 1960s, by military surgeons describing the sepsis casualties of the Sicilian and Norman campaigns and their growing awareness that chemical therapies would not solve the infection problem. These witness accounts informed the intellectual climate in which serum therapy research gradually gained credibility. The archival record shows that medicine's institutional response to untreatable infection was not predetermined but arrived at through decades of debate, trial, and documented failure of alternatives.
