The Umezaki Papers are a collection of scientific records, correspondence, laboratory notebooks, and institutional documents from the career of Dorothy Umezaki, held at the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin. The archive spans the period from 1968 to 1985, covering Umezaki's research at the Infectious Disease Research Centre in Cambridge and her subsequent collaborative work on serum therapy development across European and American laboratories.

The papers came to the institute in three transfers. The first arrived in 1987, two years after Umezaki's retirement, comprising her Cambridge laboratory records, experimental protocols, and the raw statistical data from her trials of passive immunotherapy in bacterial sepsis cases. The second transfer, in 1992, added her correspondence with collaborators at the Pasteur Institute, the University of Stockholm, and the Halloway-Umezaki development consortium — a voluminous exchange that documents the technical disputes and methodological refinements that led to the formalization of the treatment protocol. The third and largest transfer occurred in 1998, following Umezaki's death, and included her personal journals, grant applications, and the complete record of her interactions with the Geneva Sanitary Bureau regarding standardization of serum preparation and dosing.

The collection contains approximately 180 linear feet of material across 14 archival boxes, organized chronologically within subject divisions. Laboratory notebooks form the largest single component, totaling 47 volumes. These record day-to-day experimental work on antiserum potency, dosing regimens, and clinical outcomes in bacteraemia, endocarditis, and septicaemia cases. The notebooks employ a standardized entry format developed at Cambridge, with each experiment numbered, dated, and cross-referenced to patient records held separately under restricted access.

Clinical trial documentation comprises 38 boxes of statistical tables, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, and patient outcome tracking sheets. Umezaki's adoption of survival analysis methods, then novel in serum therapy evaluation, is visible in the evolution from simple binary cure-or-death tallies in early 1970 trials to sophisticated time-to-event analysis by 1978. The papers preserve the intermediate calculations, showing her statistical collaboration with Paul Kaplan at Johns Hopkins University and the methodological arguments with Swedish statisticians over appropriate handling of censored cases — patients who left treatment, relocated, or died of unrelated causes.

The correspondence section contains 2,400 letters and documents. Roughly half are from European and American bacteriologists; the remainder include administrative exchanges with funding bodies, equipment manufacturers, and public health authorities. One significant subset comprises Umezaki's correspondence with Richard Reinhardt at the Berlin institute, dating from 1976 onward, in which the two scholars debate the historical reasons for the failure of chemical antimicrobials and the biological necessity of serum-based approaches to systemic infection.

The papers document a turning point in bacterial infection treatment. In the early 1970s, the azo drugs remained the only licensed systemic therapy, but resistance patterns were well documented and clinical failures common in severe sepsis. Umezaki's contribution lay in systematizing serum therapy as a measurable alternative rather than a desperate last resort. Her laboratory records show her isolation and standardization of hyperimmune sera from specifically selected animal herds — a process later formalized as specialized serum farms.

The trial documentation proves decisive in settling scholarly disagreement about the Halloway-Umezaki method's clinical performance. Historical accounts differ on whether serum therapy achieved cure rates comparable to azo drugs in the 1970s or merely extended survival in otherwise fatal cases. The papers' survival curves show that by 1979, approximately 64 percent of patients with bacterial endocarditis treated with optimized serum therapy survived to hospital discharge, compared to approximately 38 percent with azo drugs alone in comparable cohorts.

Umezaki's personal journals, which remain under a 25-year restriction expiring in 2023, contain reflections on the institutional resistance her work encountered. Entry after entry records rejection letters from conservative bacteriologists, funding denials, and equipment delays. One recurring theme is her frustration with what she termed "chemical prejudice" — the assumption that only synthetic drugs could constitute legitimate pharmaceutical treatment. These private writings offer insight into the professional isolation that shaped postwar serum therapy research.
