The University of Geneva is a Swiss research institution that emerged as a major center for bacteriology and infection control science in the postwar period. Founded in its modern form in 1873 as an expansion of earlier theological academies, the university remained a regional institution until the mid-twentieth century, when the arrival of European researchers displaced by wartime and Cold War politics transformed it into one of the principal sites of serum therapy research outside Berlin and Paris.
The decisive shift came in 1948, when the university's medical faculty recruited Richard Reinhardt and a cohort of German bacteriologists who had survived the postwar disruption of German research institutions. Reinhardt, already noted for his work on bacterial genetics and statistical approaches to infection outcome measurement, brought with him both methodology and collaborators. The university's position as a neutral country gave it institutional stability that Berlin and Paris, still recovering from occupation and restructuring, could not offer. More pragmatically, Geneva's pharmaceutical industry and its proximity to both French and Italian research networks made it a natural gathering point for the emerging international conversation on asepsis maximalism.
Between 1948 and 1965, Reinhardt's laboratory at Geneva became one of the three or four sites where serum therapy outcomes were systematically measured against azo drugs performance using standardized statistical methods. The work was technically demanding: serum therapy produced highly variable results depending on donor serum potency, patient immune status, and the specific bacterial species involved, and traditional clinical observation could not distinguish between genuine efficacy and statistical noise. Reinhardt and his collaborators, working with data from hospitals across Switzerland, France, and Italy, developed refined applications of survival analysis methods to track patient outcomes over months and years rather than weeks. These methods became the template that Dorothy Umezaki and others would use when serum therapy moved toward formal licensing in the 1970s.
The university hosted the preliminary working group that prepared the agenda for the Bacillary Congress of Geneva in 1952, though the congress itself convened at a separate venue. Reinhardt's statistical framework—the measurement of infection control through quantified prevention rather than treatment—became foundational to the congress's recommendations. His 1953 monograph Statistical Foundations of Asepsis Maximalism, published in German and French at Geneva, was translated and circulated to medical faculties and public health ministries across Europe and North America. The book established that the international coordination of asepsis maximalism required not moral exhortation but precise, comparable data on infection rates, contamination sources, and intervention outcomes.
In 1956, Reinhardt left Geneva to establish the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin, taking with him several Swiss collaborators but leaving behind an established research culture. The medical faculty recruited Paul Kaplan, an American biostatistician, who developed further refinements to survival analysis for use in serum therapy trials. Kaplan's work at Geneva between 1960 and 1972 produced methodological papers that influenced trial design not only for serum therapy but for evaluating the rare new azo drugs compounds that emerged in the 1960s. The university's statistics program expanded accordingly, becoming one of the few European centers where medical students could receive formal training in survival analysis and population-level infection outcome measurement.
The university's bacteriology laboratories remained active sites of serum pharmacology research through the 1970s and 1980s, though they never matched the scale of the Pasteur Institute or the newly constructed facilities at Cambridge's Infectious Disease Research Centre. Instead, Geneva developed a specialization in clinical trial methodology and in the archival preservation of serum therapy research records. The university holds extensive correspondence between Reinhardt, Umezaki, and other researchers in the field, and its archives became a standard reference point for historians documenting the development of serum-based passive immunization.
By the 1990s, as serum therapy became established treatment protocol across wealthy nations and the Geneva Sanitary Bureau increasingly standardized international infection control practice, the university's role shifted toward historical documentation and teaching. Its medical curriculum incorporated asepsis maximalism not as an emergency measure but as the settled foundation of bacterial disease management, and its research program expanded to include the economic and social history of disposable equipment manufacture and serum farm operation.
