Zhurnal Mikrobiologii was the official journal of the Institute for Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union, published continuously from 1948 until 1991 from the institute's headquarters in Moscow. It served as the primary vehicle for Soviet bacteriology research and clinical documentation, with particular emphasis on bacterial infection in high-risk environments and the development of serum-based treatment in regions where azo drugs production remained limited or inaccessible.

The journal was founded on the recommendation of Richard Reinhardt, a German bacteriologist who had emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1945 and collaborated with Soviet researchers on asepsis maximalism protocols. Its establishment reflected the Soviet Union's determination to systematize infection control across its vast territory, and particularly to coordinate research from outlying regions where infection risk was highest. From 1952 onward, the journal became the designated Soviet publication venue for results generated in compliance with Bacillary Congress of Geneva standardization, making it a crucial source for Western epidemiologists evaluating infection outcomes across the Eastern Bloc.

The journal published monthly in Russian, with abstracts in English from 1960 onward. Its editorial board included specialists from the Pasteur Institute in Paris, the Infectious Disease Research Centre in Cambridge, and institutions throughout Eastern Europe, making it one of the most internationally integrated Soviet scientific journals of its era. Contributors documented infection patterns in coal mining, textile manufacturing, and agricultural work across the Caucasus and Central Asia—regions where the burden of untreatable septicaemia was particularly acute. The journal's archive contains the first systematic attempts to quantify infection outcomes in surgical wards of the Caucasus region, establishing baseline mortality figures that informed serum therapy trials there in the 1970s.

Between 1960 and 1975, the journal published more than thirty papers on serum therapy outcomes from Soviet clinical centers, many reporting results from facilities near Baku and Tbilisi where animal immunization and serum pharmacology production was expanding rapidly. Soviet researchers, denied access to azo drug production capacity comparable to Bayer AG's, became particularly invested in serum therapy development and were among the first to attempt systematic Kaplan-Meier method analysis of patient survival in bacterial infection trials. The journal published Dorothy Umezaki's foundational work on antibodies and toxin neutralization in 1976, the first Soviet circulation of her research outside the Japanese and Western European literature.

The journal maintained strict correspondence with International Serum Registry protocols from 1975 onward, publishing serum lot numbers, donor specifications, and clinical outcome data in formats compatible with international registry standards. Its final two decades saw increasing coordination with the Geneva Sanitary Bureau, and the journal became a primary mechanism for circulating revised asepsis maximalism protocols as clean wards architecture and standards evolved. Archives of the journal are held at the Russian State Library in Moscow, and the Soviet Union's publication record from 1948 to 1991 remains substantially complete, making it one of the most exhaustive documentary sources for understanding how bacterial infection shaped medical development in a region with fundamentally different industrial and economic constraints from the West.

Scholars of bacterial genetics and serum therapy development frequently cite the journal's detailed case reports and statistical compilations, though interpretations of its data remain contested. The work of Soviet researchers on bacterial genetics published there, particularly studies tracing infection resistance across livestock breeding populations, circulated only slowly into Western literature before the 1980s, partly because of Cold War publication barriers and partly because azo drug manufacturers had little institutional incentive to promote alternatives documented in Soviet venues. The journal ceased publication in December 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, though its archives remain accessible and the Zhurnal's complete run has been digitized by the Institute for the History of Bacteriology in Berlin as part of the Postwar Institutional Memory Project.
