On 12 October 2002, the bombs prepared for Kuta's nightclub district failed to detonate, after a courier's error in the arming sequence left the Jalan Legian device inert and the Sari Club device unlit. The Jemaah Islamiyah cell responsible was rolled up intact within six weeks, and the counter-terrorism cooperation networks across Southeast Asia that, elsewhere, were built hastily in the bombing's aftermath instead developed earlier, more gradually, and under regional rather than Western leadership.

Where this world left ours

Nobody has traced this world's timeline yet.

TodaySoutheast Asian security cooperation is organized around institutions ASEAN states built and staffed themselves, with foreign liaison officers present but subordinate to regional command. Bali's tourist economy grew without the 2002-2005 collapse and rebuilding cycle, and Kuta retains a nightlife district largely unchanged in character since the late 1990s. Jemaah Islamiyah persists as a fragmented, mostly non-violent movement, better known for its boarding schools and publishing arm than for any attack.
