The Sealed Report

In this world, the report of the President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy — popularly called the Warren Commission — was completed in September 1964 but never released to the public, retained instead under a standing national security classification renewed by every subsequent administration. In the absence of an official account, the public record of the assassination was built entirely out of leaks, private investigations, congressional hearings, and lawsuits over the following six decades.

Diverged 1964 · “The Warren Commission's report remains classified and is never publicly released.”

Where this world left ours

Nobody has traced this world's timeline yet.

TodayThe report remains legally classified sixty years after its completion, the subject of the pending Supreme Court case Assassination Archives Coalition v. National Archives. A vast unofficial literature — academic, journalistic, and conspiratorial — has filled the vacuum, and polling consistently shows fewer than one in five Americans believe they know the government's actual conclusion. The withheld report has become less a document than an institution, studied through its absence, cited in constitutional law courses as the primary modern test case for the limits of executive secrecy.
