The Shuttle That Never Flew
In 1972, budgetary review boards under the Office of Management and Budget concluded that the winged orbiter design proposed by NASA carried unacceptable cost overrun risk, and the Space Transportation System program was terminated in January 1973 before the first orbiter airframe, later to have been named Constitution, was completed. NASA was redirected toward expendable launch vehicles and a scaled-down space station effort, reshaping American human spaceflight for the following five decades.

Where this world left ours
Nobody has traced this world's timeline yet.
TodayHuman spaceflight in 2024 is conducted entirely through expendable and partially recoverable capsule-and-booster systems descended from the Saturn and Titan lines, with no winged orbiter ever having flown. Concord Station, a modular successor to Skylab, has been continuously occupied since 1999 and is serviced by Ares-Centaur and allied Ariane-derived vehicles. Reusable spaceplane concepts remain an active but marginal research field, associated with cancelled or perpetually deferred programs rather than operational history.
