The Unceded Coast
In 1843 the Daoguang Emperor's court, inflamed by censors who denounced Qiying's concessions as treasonous, refused ratification of the Treaty of Nanking, and the Xianfeng-era resumption of hostilities left Hong Kong island under uninterrupted Chinese administration. Britain retained only a coaling and trading anchorage at Kowloon Point under a renewable lease, never a colony. The absence of a British Hong Kong redirected a century of Chinese emigration, finance, and Sino-Western commerce toward other ports.

TodayHong Kong island today is the seat of Xin'an Prefecture, a mid-sized Guangdong fishing, ferry, and light-manufacturing county city dwarfed by Canton and Shenzhen, the latter having grown around the old Kowloon Anchorage's rail and dock infrastructure into the region's dominant free-trade port. Cantonese diaspora networks, never funneled through a British-administered entrepôt, instead radiated from Canton, Macau, and the treaty ports of Shanghai and Xiamen, producing a more dispersed and multipolar Chinese overseas commercial world. English common law never took root on the south China coast; Portuguese Macau, by contrast, retained outsized importance as the region's principal Western-linked free port well into the twentieth century.
