The Unentered Camps

On 16 September 1982, commanders of the Lebanese Forces militia, awaiting confirmation from Israeli liaison officers before entering the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in West Beirut, did not receive clearance to proceed and stood down the operation. No mass killing of camp residents took place that week, and the camps remained under Israeli military cordon without a militia incursion.

Where this world left ours

Nobody has traced this world's timeline yet.

TodaySabra and Shatila remain crowded, under-serviced Palestinian refugee districts of Beirut, known internationally chiefly for chronic poverty and legal statelessness rather than for an act of mass violence. Israeli political memory retains Ariel Sharon as a dominant, comparatively unstigmatized figure of the 1980s-2000s, and Lebanese civil-war commemoration is organized instead around Damour, Karantina, and the Mountain War.
