In 1950 marathon swimming officials rejected the use of a protective shark cage during an attempted crossing of the Straits of Florida, ruling it a mechanical aid that voided any claim to an unaided swim. The ruling hardened into a durable code, the Bare Passage Rule, under which the 166-kilometre channel between Cuba and the Florida Keys has never been completed by a swimmer without disqualifying assistance.
