The Unmarked Face

In 1924, the Black Hills sculpture project proposed by historian Doane Robinson collapsed before carving began, and the granite cliff later known as the Six Grandfathers was never cut into presidential likenesses. South Dakota's tourism and federal monument strategy developed instead around other sites, with lasting consequences for how the United States marked its own commemorative landscape.

Nobody has traced this world's timeline yet.

TodayThe Six Grandfathers remains an unsculpted granite formation within the Black Hills, managed jointly by the National Park Service and representatives of the Great Sioux Nation under a 1987 co-stewardship charter. South Dakota's tourism economy centers on the Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, and Badlands National Park, while the absence of a rival carved monument has made the Six Grandfathers a frequently cited symbol in land-return and sacred-site litigation nationwide.
