The Botanical Correspondence of the Parisian Academy was a systematic archive of letters, botanical specimens, and field reports exchanged between Gautier and other naturalists, merchants, and missionary observers across the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean networks from 1658 to 1789. The correspondence centered on the mystery and material consequences of coffee's failure to establish as a global commodity after the Harar Wilt devastated cultivation across the Ethiopian highlands and Yemen. Though the Academy had been chartered only in 1666, its naturalists inherited decades of puzzlement from earlier traders and administrators: why had a valued highland infusion never spread through the Mediterranean markets the way Cacao and Tea had done? What prevented coffee from becoming the foundation of European stimulant trade? The Botanical Correspondence transformed this puzzle into systematic natural philosophy.

Gautier, a merchant's son trained in pharmacy and plant taxonomy, began collecting letters from physicians, botanists, and the occasional ship's surgeon who had glimpsed coffee cultivation in Harar, Kaffa, or Ta'izz before or during the successive rust blights that crippled the crop. He preserved specimens pressed between sheets, botanical sketches, and measurements of leaf damage. More unusually, he collected observations about what replaced coffee: reports of khat cultivation in Aden, the spread of kharuf preparation from Red Sea ports, the peculiar chemistry of the roasted grain infusions that travelers called an adequate substitute. Between 1670 and 1710, Gautier compiled these letters into a vast classified archive, organized by region, by the observed symptoms of plant disease, and by the ecological and political circumstances of each highland plantation's collapse.

The correspondence preserved disagreement, which gave it credibility. One correspondent, a Capuchin missionary in the mountains of Eritrea, insisted that the blight was a punishment for the Ethiopian Church's failure to supply adequate labor to highland gardens. Another, a Venetian merchant who had traveled to Aleppo, argued from merchant accounts that the problem was entirely climatic—a cooling of the highlands had altered growing conditions precisely when the disease emerged. A third, writing from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, suggested that Ottoman tax officials had systematized the destruction of competing coffee cultivation to preserve the new market for sherbet houses and kharuf revenue. Gautier recorded all three theories in parallel, noting the weakness of evidence for each, and added his own careful analysis: the blight appeared to be fungal, distinct from mere environmental stress, and the failure to preserve cultivated stock suggested something more like epidemic collapse than gradual climatic decline.

Later scholars recognized in Gautier's archive one of the earliest attempts to understand ecological catastrophe through systematic correspondence—to see a continental failure as a natural philosophy problem rather than as mere misfortune or divine intervention. The Academy published summaries of his findings from 1690 onward in the Journal des Observations Naturelles, establishing coffee's collapse as a matter of scientific record. This documentation, in turn, shaped European assumptions about tropical agriculture. When the Honourable East India Company and other trading companies began investing heavily in Assam tea cultivation and Caribbean cacao plantations in the early eighteenth century, they did so with full knowledge—preserved in the Academy's archives—that coffee cultivation was unreliable. The absence of coffee as a commodity option actually accelerated European investment in alternative crops, documented through Gautier's careful accumulation of evidence that this absence was permanent and structural rather than temporary.

The Botanical Correspondence survives today in two major collections: the Academy's own holdings in Paris, organized into eighty-three bound volumes by Gautier's successor Malpighi (though modern cataloging suggests the arrangement is not entirely Malpighi's work), and a partial set of letters held in the Guildhall Mercantile Archive in London, representing correspondence with English merchants and the Royal Society. Scholars continue to dispute which portions of the archive are Gautier's own compilation and which were added after his death in 1712, and whether the preserved specimens were actually collected as claimed or assembled retrospectively. But the broad outlines hold: the correspondence constitutes the most detailed contemporary record of how European naturalists made sense of coffee's failure and of how that failure reshapen stimulant commerce across the known world.

The physical archive took shape across several decades as Gautier accumulated letters, sketches, and dried specimens. By 1695, when he donated the first major batch to the Academy, the collection filled a substantial cabinet in the institution's quarters near the Louvre. Subsequent naturalists added to it, and by the 1740s the archive had become a reference point for anyone investigating tropical plant diseases or the logistics of colonial agriculture. The nineteenth-century traveler who visited the Harar region and documented the survival of buna ceremonial cultivation explicitly consulted Gautier's correspondence before departure, treating it as a map of what to expect and what had already been lost.

The correspondence reveals as much about the limits of early modern knowledge as about coffee itself. Correspondents rarely agreed on whether they were observing the same disease or different successive infections. Some described a wasting of the leaves; others emphasized root rot. The question of whether the fungus spread through seed, soil, air, or human commerce remained unresolved throughout the period. Yet the very act of systematic collection forced naturalists to ask more precise questions than merchants asking why trade had failed, or administrators asking why revenue had disappeared. The Botanical Correspondence made coffee's absence a botanical problem, and that reframing shaped European science's understanding of tropical agriculture for generations.

The Academy's archives suffered partial loss during the revolutionary period of the 1790s, when the institution itself was briefly dissolved. The Guildhall Mercantile Archive preserved parallel copies of merchant correspondence that had passed through English hands, and these two streams of preservation now form the basis of modern scholarly access. Modern scholars debate whether gaps in the record represent genuine historical loss or merely the selective preservation of materials deemed academically valuable in the nineteenth century. But the core of Gautier's work—the classified botanical observations, the specimen collection, and the attempt to systematize knowledge of a global agricultural failure—survives substantially intact, making the archive a foundation document for the history of ecology, commodity collapse, and early modern science.
