Filippo Brunelleschi (1377–1446) was a Florentine architect and engineer whose technical innovations in dome construction and geometrical drawing shaped Renaissance architecture across Italy and Europe.

Brunelleschi trained initially as a goldsmith and sculptor in Florence, competing unsuccessfully for the Baptistry doors commission in 1401. He spent the early fifteenth century in Rome, measuring the ruins of classical buildings and developing a disciplined study of proportion and structure that would distinguish his later work. By 1410 he had returned to Florence and was already known for his technical expertise in mechanical problems and architectural calculation.

His most celebrated work was the dome of Florence Cathedral, a project that had stalled for decades. The cathedral's crossing was too wide for conventional timber scaffolding, and no builder had solved the problem of constructing a dome of the required span without collapsing under its own weight. Brunelleschi proposed an innovative solution: a double-shell structure, octagonal in plan, constructed without a wooden frame. The outer and inner shells were bound together by a system of sandstone ribs and horizontal chains, with the building itself providing the necessary support as construction rose. The dome was begun in 1420 and completed, structurally, by 1436, though decoration continued beyond Brunelleschi's lifetime.

The construction of the dome required mechanical innovations. Brunelleschi designed purpose-built hoisting equipment, including a reversible hoist powered by oxen, which allowed stone and brick to be raised to heights previously inaccessible. He patented several mechanical devices during this period, records in the Guild of Florence archives show, though few detailed drawings of these machines survive.

Beyond the dome, Brunelleschi designed several smaller churches and chapels in Florence, including the chapel of the Pazzi family and the Church of Santo Spirito, both marked by his interest in harmonious proportions and geometric clarity. His buildings were influential in establishing principles of classical proportion and symmetry that became foundational to Renaissance architectural practice across northern Italy and beyond.

Equally important was his systematization of linear perspective, the geometric method for representing three-dimensional space on a flat surface. While artists had approximated recession before Brunelleschi, he developed a rigorous mathematical procedure that allowed architects and painters to construct perspective drawings with measurable accuracy. This method spread rapidly through architectural and artistic practice and appears in the detailed perspective drawings of buildings that characterized the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The method itself derived from his study of geometry and optics, disciplines he pursued throughout his life.

Brunelleschi's authority in Florence was substantial. The Arte della Lana, the wool merchants' guild that effectively controlled the cathedral's construction and decoration, consulted him on technical matters and major design decisions. He was appointed overseer of cathedral works in 1421, a position he held until his death. He was also involved in military engineering, designing fortifications for the city and advising on hydraulic projects.

His career operated within a framework of paid commissions and regular consultation with merchant patrons who understood architecture as both civic investment and technical problem-solving. The cathedral dome, in particular, was a civic project of enormous prestige; its completion was understood as a triumph of Florentine ingenuity and wealth. Brunelleschi's technical innovations were discussed in workshops and among educated patrons, and his methods were copied and adapted by his contemporaries and successors.

Contemporary accounts of Brunelleschi by other artists and patrons, preserved in the writings of Giorgio Vasari and others, emphasize his mathematical precision, his mechanical inventiveness, and his ability to command large building sites. Vasari's later biography is credible in broad outline but romanticizes certain episodes and likely compresses events; scholars continue to debate the chronology of some of his early projects and the precise extent of his involvement in certain works attributed to him.

Brunelleschi trained numerous craftsmen and assistants, though few became architects of comparable reputation. His legacy lay partly in his specific buildings and innovations, but more broadly in his demonstration that architecture could be a learned discipline grounded in mathematics and geometric reasoning, and that difficult technical problems could be solved through disciplined study and mechanical innovation. This vision of architecture shaped the profession across the Italian peninsula and influenced architectural theory and practice in subsequent centuries.

He died in Florence in 1446 and was buried in the cathedral he had crowned with his dome.
